Rochdale Riverside: A joint venture between Kajima and Genr8 in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council

Rochdale Riverside is a new retail and leisure area being developed in central Rochdale, UK, next to the Metrolink tram station and a new transport interchange.

Developed by a joint venture between Genr8 and Kajima in collaboration with Rochdale Borough Council, Rochdale Riverside will be a three-story building with retail space of 150,000ft2 and recreational space of 60,000ft2, housing up to 24 retail and leisure units ranging from 1,000ft2 to 20,000ft2. A six-screen Reel cinema on the third floor and a multi-storey car park with 520 parking spaces will also feature in the shopping complex. This development will be surrounded by an attractive public area with a complimentary anchor for leisure activities and will also feature a central pedestrian street style.

Over a ten-year lease period, Swedish fashion giant H&M will occupy a 22,500ft2 space on two floors. Several retailers will also have stores in the shopping centre, including M&S, Next, Boots, JD Sports, and River Island.

This project is part of the £250m regeneration programme of Rochdale town centre, which aims to improve the local heritage. The development plan for Rochdale Riverside was approved in April 2017 with construction work beginning in March 2018, and completion scheduled for June 2020. It will benefit from about one million shoppers, 12,000 nearby homes and over 8,000 Rochdale-based businesses.

CACI research revealed that Rochdale Riverside will boost the town's Retail Footprint score by 45%. The growth in shopping, catering and leisure quality and quantity results in a step-changing classification of Rochdale, upgrading it from a Small Metropolitan Town to a Medium Metropolitan Town.

Located in the centre of the Northern Powerhouse area, it is well connected through the M62 motorway to Manchester and Leeds. Manchester Victoria is only 19 minutes away, and Manchester Airport is 21 minutes, connected with direct rail links. The nearby Metrolink station provides services to the rest of Greater Manchester every 12 minutes.
